Amanda Burnside, 42, of East Quogue, was sentenced to 18 years in prison in Suffolk County Court after a jury found her guilty of arson and related charges, the DA’s office announced Thursday, Feb. 27.
Burnside attempted, but ultimately failed, to start fires at two occupied homes in Hampton Bays and succeeded in starting a fire at a third home that was occupied by four people in November 2023, as Daily Voice reported.
At the third home, she ignited the fire by pouring gasoline onto a wicker bench on the front porch and lighting papers on fire, according to prosecutors. Suffolk County Police arrested Burnside at the scene a short time later.
Jurors convicted her of second-degree arson and two counts of attempted arson, all felonies, on Monday, Jan. 27. She also pleaded guilty to attempted robbery for trying to forcibly steal money from a Dollar Tree cashier while displaying a knife, hours after being released on the arson-related charges.
“Suffolk will not tolerate arson and violence,” said District Attorney Raymond Tierney. “This defendant’s crime spree is over.”
Burnside was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the arson-related convictions and 10 years for the attempted robbery conviction to run concurrently.
